Therapists' Forum

Here are some examples of the uses of Kid's Kourt products in actual practice settings. Please e-mail us with your comments and insights regarding your use of Therapy dolls or any of the Kid's Kourt products. We would be delighted to share them in this forum.

Giving Voice to a Cry for Help
This doll photo was submitted by a private practice therapist. The doll was painted by a developmentally delayed female child referred to the therapist for assessment. The child had positive medical findings for sexual abuse, but speech difficulties made it impossible for her to communicate what was happening to her. The child chose a red marker, scribbled in the lower portion of the doll and told the therapist "owie." She also squirted glue on the doll's face and chest, telling the therapist, "yukkie."

The child's mother had numerous male friends, and authorities were unable to determine the identity of the perpetrator. Based on the assessment and other evidence, however, the child was found to be in need of protection and services provided by her local social service agency.

      Taking Back Power

This doll was done by a male child who was being prepared to testify in court. He was the victim of sexual molestation. As a step toward the child's own empowerment, and with the encouragement of both therapist and advocate, the child then used his marker to "beat up" the perpetrator.

A practical lesson was learned from this child, who was using a regular black ink marking pen. He became so caught up in venting his anger that he scribbled the doll and himself. Since then, we have used washable markers!

       Working with Multiples

Preparing a young woman diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder to testify in court means preparing all of her alter personalities as well. In one instance that meant working with 23 "others" in addition to the host personality. During her initial meeting with the advocate the young woman was given three copies of Getting Ready for Court after stating that "they" were multiple. She returned later in the week, complaining of trouble at home: her alters were arguing over which ones would get to color in the books! The problem was resolved by sending them home with 12 additional copies of the book.
